Yesterday I went to H&M Home for the first time and let me tell you… It was a dream come true. Their homeware selection is amazing. But I was good, and only bought two things. One of which was on sale, so go Row! Although I didn’t come away with the whole store in my purse, I couldn’t stop thinking about the things I’d seen. I was going to buy a couple things to bring back to Halifax, but I don’t really know what I want/need for our new place and figured I’d wait it out. Apparently H&M Home is going to start shipping to Canada coming this fall so I can make decisions later on!
I’ve been doing a lot of online window shopping lately to try and figure out what I want to do with our new place when we move. I’ve always been a huge fan of white, calm interiors with pops of colour and as you probably guessed from my #Trending post about blush interiors… I’m quite obsessed with rose colour decor at the moment. While the space and lighting in our new apartment is lovely, I have to deal with light yellow walls throughout the entire space. Urh. Some days I think about being a landlord just so I can provide bright and neutral apartments for people to showcase their own style! Yellow walls? Really? Looks like my rosy dreams have been shattered.
At least the walls have been painted recently and are down well. It is a nice shade of yellow but isn’t a colour I would ever paint a room unless I owned a quirky grandma-chic cottage on the coast.
That being said, I am quite excited for the challenge. Moving always inspires me, and I am really excited to work on a new apartment. This challenge extends further than simply an unfortunate wall colour because we are also downsizing from a three bedroom, three-story house, to a one-bedroom flat. I’m going to have to really think about the specific items I want to purchase to decorate so that the space doesn’t feel overwhelmed, while also getting rid of things that don’t fit in with my overall aesthetic.
Due to the hours I’ve spent browsing online my secret “Wish List” board on Pinterest now has 82 items. For my wallet’s sake, I figured that I should probably narrow those items down to my must-haves for when we move. These are a few things I’m loving at the moment!
My Design Plan
I think my design plan is going to be extremely neutral. Keeping the brown and beige colours to a minimum and bringing in more crisp white, grey and black tones to modernize the space and bring it as far away from grandma chic as I can. I love adding quirky vintage pieces into a space, and I think the juxtaposition of a modern colour palette will emphasize the cool antique pieces I already own to create a sense of balance in the space. The yellow walls make quite a statement already so I don’t get to play around too much with an accent colour. Playing around with mixed metals will add a touch of glam, and I have my eye on the copper & gold wire baskets from H&M because they will double as beautiful decor and much-needed storage!
I also really love this striped rug from the kid’s section of H&M Home and think that it would work really well in my little office nook that sits right of the living room. I always think that adding a comfy rug completes a space, and think that this narrow runner type rug might fit perfectly. To complete the space, I want to bring in this beautiful IKEA desk lamp, and wicker baskets!
My goal when creating a beautiful home is always to create a space that feels cozy and comfortable without sacrificing style. Adding fluffy pillows, throw blankets, wicker baskets and candles brings a softness to the crisp white, grey, and black colour scheme that I’m hoping to stick too.
