Yesterday I was perusing through Twitter when I stumbled across The Girl Gang‘s twitter chat about confidence. They posted various questions asking things like “When around other confident people, does it help encourage [you] to be the same? Or do you tend to shy away?” and “what makes you amazing?”. I watched as my feed swirled with an astounding number of positive tweets bringing people out of their shells to give them a platform where they could proudly state what they love about themselves without shame.
To answer the question, “Are there any specific things that help boost your confidence? Do you try to put things into practice to help yourself?” there were so many women who talked about faking confidence in certain situations in order to present themselves in a certain way. I found myself relating to many things that these women were saying, finding their tips similar to the tricks I use when venturing into a new situation, and even learned a few new ways to find strength within myself.
I think what this chat proved to all the people involved was that we are much stronger than we think. It reminded us that when going into unknown situations we need to remember that even those who look as though their life is together… The reality may be that they feel just as lost and intimidated as we do. There is so much more going on behind a smile and a perfect outfit.
The chat was a place for people to admit their fears and tell the world that some days they leave the house feeling anything but confident. It was so comforting to read through the tweets and realize that although social media generally depicts the beautiful and perfect snapshots of our lives… In reality we are all struggling with the same issues.
Society is such a complicated place. Trying to maneuver through conventions to find your place in the world is tough. The list of things we are criticised for far outnumbers the list of things we are praised for and I think this needs to change.
This community that I stumbled upon has one goal: to spread positivity and good vibes to everyone! To be kind, and let people tell their truth. To crush the walls that years of criticism have boxed us into and allow encouragement and light to flow around us and lift us up.
The women I talked to last night on twitter were strong, encouraging and kind people who talked about their lack of confidence honestly and openly. And yet… I couldn’t help but leave the discussion feeling as though through talking about our universal lack of confidence, we all found a piece of confidence within us that would not have been there without the support and kindness we found within each other.
“We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.”
― J.K. Rowling,
Shout out to J.K. Rowling for always reminding me that there is magic in love and kindness. I mean.. Who knew I’d find magic amongst a group of Muggles on twitter? Thank you to all the amazing women who participated in the chat last night! You inspire me.
I’m going to go listen to some Demi Lovato because “Confident” has been stuck in my head all day! Hope everyone has a great evening, and I’ll talk to you on Friday!
