Out with the old, in with the new

2017 review

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing holiday after the difficult year we just had. In my personal life, 2016 was an okay year. It definitely wasn’t one for the books, but it did make me feel grateful for all the incredible things and people that have in my life.

2016 was a year filled with upsetting celebrity deaths, political unrest, fear and anxiety. We lost a lot of people that we knew through our favourite albums and films, and wept for the lives lost in senseless hate crimes and in war zones. In Canada, we had to sit back and watch as our neighbour voted for a man who makes us terrified for the future.

In 2016 we took three steps back. But in 2017 let’s take a few steps forward. Starting with our homes! There’s a lot a changing in 2017 when it comes to interior design.

My research into 2017 home decor trends has been interesting because it’s so evident that we are all longing for a fresh start.

Even the Pantone colour of the year, Greenery, is playing into this idea. The vibrant green colour is supposed to bring a new energy into our spaces.

“Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute

Other new decor trends are mimicking this idea as well. In 2017 we’re supposed to see a shift away from neutral all-white interiors with pristine minimalist kitchens and sharp modern silhouettes. The colour pairings this year feature rich colours like magenta and lemon yellow instead of delicate blush pink and periwinkle of 2016.

In addition to this dynamic colour palette, bold patterns and lots and lots of texture are expected to be featured prominently in design this year. It seems like designers are jumping at the chance to take risks. Elle Decor even says that playful butterfly motifs will be popular this year to add a bit of whimsy, grace and optimism.

Optimism seems to be the word of the year so far. People are taking to social media to discuss how they are going to make 2017 a good year by deciding to actively participate in creating a better world. So let’s get ready to see this reflected in our homes as well!

How will you incorporate these new design trends into your home this year?

Love your blogs !!! I spent a good portion of today re-jigging our living & dining room space … With the relocation of our loveseat to the newly reno’d basement (for the teen-aged gamers to lounge on) there was a lot of wall space freed up. What a difference a fresh furniture arrangement makes !!! Out with the old, in with the new for 2017 !!! Bring it on !!!
